Limón-based Modern Dance Class
Taught by Donna Krasnow.
Free Open Access
This dance class taught by Donna Krasnow is free public access on Vimeo. It is an
advanced-level modern dance class based on the technique of José Limón. The class is
founded on the movement concepts fundamental to the Limón philosophy: weight, fall
and rebound, fall and recovery, succession, opposition, isolation, breath, and
suspension. Additional elements include the use of rhythm and musicality specific to the
Limón tradition, alignment, dynamics, use of space, improvisation, and artistic
expression. The first half of the video is floor and center work, and the second half of
the video focuses on traveling material. Many thanks to the dancers and musicians who
contributed to this video, to Canadian Contemporary Dance Theatre for the use of the
space, to Dance Collection Danse for the use of the video-recording equipment, and to
my course administrator and camera person, Andrea Downie.

The goal of the C-I Training™ video series is to provide a conditioning system
for dancers that improves muscular strength and flexibility, aids in injury
prevention, and enhances technical skills and aesthetic beauty. For these
changes in the body's physique to be beneficial and transfer to dance
practice, it is crucial that the brain learns how to "speak" to the muscles so
that they are organized in more efficient ways. This is called neuromuscular
repatterning, or motor recruitment, and can be achieved through the use of
imagery and visualization. A primary focus of this work is to encourage body
integration, the complex organization of multiple muscle groups to establish
core support and the right amounts of muscle tension to optimize the
movement without undue stress. C-I Training™ can be used at any level from
the beginner to the most advanced professional dancer.
